Review: Jungle Jack’s Wackiest, Wildest, and Weirdest Animals in the World 07/07/2009
After I put the two little ones to bed for naptime, my oldest has a quiet time of his own. He’s not to bother me, and he can do anything he likes as long as it doesn’t involve too much noise. For the last few weeks, I’ve gotten used to finding him in the living room floor hunched over the latest offering from Jack Hanna and Thomas Nelson Press. Jack Hanna’s new book, Jungle Jack’s Wackiest, Wildest, and Weirdest Animals in the World is one of my son’s favorite quiet time “reads”. After reading it aloud to him a few times, he’s well acquainted with the armadillo, the blue-footed boobie, and the duck billed platypus.
On each page you’ll find a different wild, weird, or wacky animal, along with information about where it lives, and what makes it unique in the animal kingdom. The pictures are outstanding, and the writing is fairly good. Considering that these kinds of books are rarely very good to read aloud, I was relieved that the wording was fluid. In fact, it read very much like it was written to be read by a narrator on a wild-life show. Imagine that.
One thing I absolutely adored about this book is that it doesn’t come loaded with evolutionary assumptions when speaking of the animals’ designs. Jungle Jack’s is very Creation-friendly and will fit well into the library of a family seeking to teach their children a biblical worldview. The way this book is written, the mentions of God and His created order feel a bit forced, like they were really an afterthought, but at least there are no millions of years to unteach after reading it!
The book came with a DVD of bloopers from Jack Hanna’s Into the Wild tv show. I can’t really recommend the DVD, unfortunately. While it was mildly amusing to see some of the silly things Jack Hanna has said and done on video, I was rather bored with the whole thing. The kids wandered outside to play after about 5 minutes, so I’m thinking it’s not just me.
All in all, I’d give this book 3 out of 5 stars.
You can buy Jungle Jack’s Wackiest, Wildest, and Weirdest Animals in the World at Amazon.com.
